Conditions that Require a Specially Trained Dentist
Special needs patients require a gentle approach and specific accommodations in order to ensure their comfort and safety. Dr. Olszewski understands dental anxiety may be an concern, and has worked with patients of all ages who have conditions such as:
- Alzheimer’s disease
- Parkinson’s disease
- Multiple Sclerosis (MS)
- Cerebral palsy
- Autism spectrum disorders and Asperger’s
- Down syndrome
- Other mental or physical impairments that make sitting for extended periods of time uncomfortable
Why Special Needs Patients Need Special Care
Special needs patients are not always capable of maintaining good oral hygiene practices on a regular basis. A patient with Alzheimer’s may neglect their oral care altogether, while patients with Parkinson’s or MS may find brushing and flossing difficult. These patients need regular dental checkups to stay on top of potential complications like tooth decay and gum disease.
Going to the dentist can overwhelm those with sensory disorders such as autism. If these patients are not treated with appropriate care, their dental visits could become traumatic experiences. As a result, they may avoid going back to the dentist, which can lead to more oral health complications.
Regardless of your age or your needs, Dr. Olszewski can provide you with the dental care you need in a safe and comfortable environment.
Dr. Olszewski’s Training and Experience
At Northampton Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, we understand that every patient has unique needs. We make every effort to ensure our patients’ needs are met, and we do so in a welcoming and comfortable environment. Dr. Olszewski attended the residency program at Tufts University where she gained experience in providing dental care to patients with mental and physical disabilities. She also regularly serves as a dental screening volunteer for the Special Olympics.
She has ensured our office is equipped to accommodate patients of all levels of abilities and needs. We offer additional physical accommodations to ensure each of our patients is comfortable during treatment. Dr. Olszewski also offers inhaled sedation (nitrous oxide), which is safe for all patients and makes dental treatments comfortable and anxiety-free. She also creates treatment plans tailored to each patient. For those who find it more difficult to maintain their oral health with at-home care, Dr. Olszewski may recommend more frequent dental cleanings and checkups.
