Complete Periodontal Care to Combat Gum Disease

To reverse gum disease and restore your oral health, Dr. Teddi Olszewski offers complete periodontal care. In early to intermediate stages, oral rinses and deep cleanings can be effective options. If you have more severe gum disease, you may require oral surgery. If you are suffering from the symptoms of gum disease, contact Northampton Family & Cosmetic Dentistry and schedule a consultation.

Proper periodontal care may improve your systemic wellness and even extend your life.

What Is Gum Disease?

In the earliest stages of gum disease, you will experience gum inflammation, or gingivitis. In this phase, bacteria will accumulate along your gum line. The microbes will then cause your soft tissues to become inflamed, leading to minor redness and sensitivity. If gingivitis goes untreated, it will eventually develop into periodontitis. In this stage, the bacteria will move deeper into your gums and form pockets in the tissues. The pockets will gradually grow larger, causing the tissues to pull away from your tooth roots and jawbone. Symptoms of periodontitis are much more severe. They can include significant discomfort, redness, and bleeding. Eventually, you could suffer from gum recession, tooth loss, and jaw degeneration.gum disease

Gum Disease Treatment Options

Gingivitis is easy to treat, and you will typically need only a routine dental cleaning. After your cleaning, it is imperative that you maintain proper dental hygiene to prevent a recurrence of gum disease. Since you may be at a higher risk for periodontitis, Dr. Olszewski can recommend certain antibiotic mouthwashes or other products to use at home.

Unfortunately, there is no cure for periodontitis. However, appropriate care can keep gum disease from becoming worse. In many cases, Dr. Olszewski will recommend a deep cleaning, or scaling and root planing. She or your hygienist will eliminate the bacterial pockets and remove the rough patches on your tooth roots. Because bacteria can gather in these areas, a deep cleaning can prevent a recurrence of gum disease. Dr. Olszewski may also recommend oral rinses, often in conjunction with scaling and planing.

If you have a severe case of gum disease, you may need oral surgery. Techniques can vary, and treatment can include both tissue removal and tissue grafting. If you have suffered jaw recession, you may also benefit from a bone graft. Dr. Olszewski will carefully evaluate your needs and determine the most appropriate treatment for you. She takes a conservative approach and will never recommend more treatment than necessary.

The Importance of Gum Disease Treatment

If you are experiencing symptoms of gum disease, it is important to seek treatment as soon as possible. Without timely and effective care, you could experience serious damage to your smile. In addition, gum disease can have negative consequences for your overall health. Multiple studies have revealed a link between gum disease and an increased risk for high blood pressure, heart attack, and stroke. Proper periodontal care may improve your systemic wellness and even extend your life.
