Gum Contouring: Reshape Your Gum Line, Refine Your Smile

checking gum pocketsGum contouring is a virtually painless procedure that involves reshaping the gum line to improve the look of your smile. If your gum line is uneven or falls too far below your lip line when you smile, it can cause teeth to look worn or misshapen. Often, the removal of a very small portion of gum tissue can make a dramatic difference in the appearance of your smile. If you are self-conscious about your "gummy" smile, contact our office today to learn more about how gum contouring can help. During your consultation, Dr. Teddi Olszewski will explain the benefits of undergoing gum contouring at our Northampton, MA-area practice.

The Procedure

Before the gum contouring procedure begins, we will administer a local anesthetic to minimize discomfort. Next, Dr. Olszewski uses a diode laser to remove excess gum tissue and reshape your gum line. Using a diode laser instead of a scalpel results in less bleeding and reduced risk of infection. It also eliminates the need for sutures. Every procedure is tailored to the individual, and Dr. Olszewski will only remove the amount of tissue needed to give your smile a healthy, symmetrical appearance. The procedure is fairly quick, very efficient, and virtually pain-free.

Recovery

Recovery from gum contouring can involve some mild discomfort, but you should be able to resume your normal activities shortly after the procedure. You may experience sore or swollen gums for up to a week. During that time, you will need to avoid foods that are spicy, tough, or have seeds. Instead, you should primarily eat foods that are soft and smooth. Following the procedure, patients are also advised to be very careful when brushing and flossing their teeth. Over-the-counter pain relievers can help to minimize discomfort as you heal.

Combining Treatments

Gum contouring is often performed as part of a comprehensive treatment plan for improving the look of a patient's smile. The placement of porcelain veneers or dental crowns is often performed in conjunction with laser gum reshaping. By improving the look of your teeth as well as your gum line, we can provide a dramatic aesthetic enhancement.

Benefits and Risks

Even if your teeth are straight and healthy, excess gum tissue can cause them to look unhealthy or uneven. Laser gum contouring is a simple way to remove small amounts of gum tissue to help your smile look its best. The procedure poses some risks, such as excessive bleeding and swelling of the gums, but you can minimize these risks by choosing a dentist like Dr. Olszewski who is experienced in the procedure and uses the most advanced tools.

Depending on your goals, she may also recommend other treatments that can complement gum contouring to give you the smile you envision.
